Sonia Sheehan is an elementary physical education teacher in Calgary. She has been teaching for over 20 years and loves to share her passion for being active for life. Sonia has been involved with the HPEC executive for over 20 years and enjoys connecting with physical education teachers around the province. During her free time she enjoys swimming, biking, running, triathlon competition and playing a round of golf.
VP Leadership in Curriculum and Pedagogy
Stacey holds a Bachelor of Physical Education, Bachelor of Education, as well as a Masters degree in Integrated Studies, and is currently a Doctoral Candidate working in the area of: Theorizing Curriculum and Teacher Professional Development. She is in her 26th year with Edmonton Public Schools, and was formerly a Consultant within the Comprehensive School Health Unit as part of Student Learning Support Services, recently returning to the classroom at Ottewell Jr. High School for the 2021-2022. Having started her teaching career at Nipisihkopahk Secondary School in Maskwacis, she has since carried out a variety of roles and responsibilities from classroom teacher status to that of department head and has been a part of HPEC for the last 4 years.

Emily is the Assistant Principal at St. Bonaventure Junior High School in Calgary. Luckily, she still gets to teach Phys Ed! Emily has been a member of HPEC since 2016. Emily loves participating in all sorts of activities, from golfing, to skiing, mountain biking and road cycling- but most of all, her new love is pickleball!!
Jillian Shaw is an elementary physical education teacher in Calgary. She has worked in a variety of settings facilitating education, play and recreation for youth. When she is not working Jillian enjoys spending time with her family, biking in Fish Creek, trying out a new restaurant or trying to break out of an escape room with her husband.
Ty is an Elementary Physical Education teacher at Strathcona-Tweedsmuir School in Okotoks. Prior to coming to Alberta, Ty spent 8 years teaching High School PHE in South Korea and Hong Kong at Canadian and American international schools. Ty recently completed his MEd in Curriculum & Pedagogy from the University of Alberta and is passionate about pedagogies that prioritize meaningful experiences in Physical Education. Ty enjoys spending time hiking, cycling, XC skiing and travelling.

Karla is a Junior High PE and Opportunity teacher with Edmonton Public Schools. She is a long time member of HPEC. Karla is passionate about teaching Physical Education and seeing her students become as passionate about movement as she is. In her spare time, Karla can be found coaching and playing wheelchair basketball, participating in crossfit and spending time walking with her significant other and walking their pup Henry.

Lisa Taylor is a PhD student and sessional instructor at the Werklund School of Education, University of Calgary. Following eight years as a K–12 physical and health education teacher in Alberta, Lisa transitioned to teaching physical and health education teacher education courses and researching teacher wellness, health promotion in schools, and technology to support wellness education. In her own time, Lisa enjoys engaging in daily physical activity and embracing time outdoors with her family.
Darren Dornstauder is a Vice-Principal at Holy Trinity Academy in Okotoks. Darren is passionate about engaging students in meaningful experiences of learning through physical activity and the outdoors. In his own time, Darren enjoys running, skiing, mountain biking and spending time with his family.
Meredith is a K-9 Physical Education teacher at Riverside School in Calgary. Throughout her 16 years teaching & 6 years as a Recreation Therapist she has dedicated herself to inspiring youth in developing the skills & attitudes that lead to a healthy active lifestyle. In her free time, Meredith can be found mountain biking, camping, running, hiking, and enjoying the outdoors with her family.
Zachary is a K-9 school Phys Ed teacher and Athletic Director at Dr. Roy Wilson School in Medicine Hat. He is the head coach of the boys Basketball program, junior high badminton and helps out with the golf team. He has been a member of the HPEC executive since 2018. Zachary enjoys spending time golfing, fishing, and enjoying the outdoors with his friends and family.
Jonathan is a High school Phys Ed teacher and Athletic Director at Winston Churchill High School in Lethbridge. He is the head coach of the football program and boys rugby program at his school. He has been a member of the HPEC executive since 2016. Jonathan enjoys spending time golfing, fishing, and enjoying the outdoors with his wife and two young daughters.
Matt is the current K-9 Consultant for Physical Education and Health in Calgary Catholic. My previous experiences in Calgary Catholic include being an Athletic Representative, Physical Education and Health lead, and Special Education teacher. I am an advocate for Physical Education to be a positive experience with a variety of educational opportunities. I am a huge sports fan as well as an avid golfer, love spending time watching any live sports and looking forward to watching with my son, Beckett.
Erik is a teacher with Black Gold Schools. He is back with HPEC and is looking forward to helping support HPE teachers in the Greater Edmonton area.
Lyndon Suntjens & Colette Tercier
Lyndon Suntjens is nêhiyaw from Goodfish Lake First Nation and is currently a teacher at amiskwaciy Academy in Edmonton, Alberta. Previously, Lyndon worked at Ashmont Secondary School, Westmount Jr. High School and Victoria School of the Arts teaching classes such as Physical Education, Social Studies, nêhiyawêwin and Indigenous Studies. He has also worked as a Curriculum Consultant with Alberta Education. Lyndon is a father and husband who is grounded in ceremony and culture. He enjoys sports, the outdoors and working with youth.
Colette is a Junior High PE, Outdoor Education, and LA teacher with the Edmonton Catholic School Division. She has been involved with HPEC since her pre-service teaching days and has loved every minute. As the Health and Physical Education Lead Teacher at her school, Colette works to empower her staff and students to live active, joy filled lives. She loves coaching volleyball, and cheering her students on. When she isn’t marking, Colette loves to spend time outside with her daughter, husband, and dog.
Michael Hargas is a Junior High/High School PE Teacher at Grand Trunk High School in Evansburg AB. This is his 7th year on the executive. He recently retired from playing rugby, but enjoys refereeing it, along with basketball! His focus is making a positive impact on every student he sees everyday!
Nichole is a Kindergarten to Grade 8 Physical Education teacher for Grande Prairie Public Division. Nichole graduated with a combined degree of B. Physical Education/ B. Education with a minor in Biological Science. She is a huge advocate for developing multi-sport athletes and sparking the excitement and importance of living healthy active lives. Nichole has always been busy playing many sports, getting outside, traveling and spending time with her family and friends.
Nancy is the Associate Coordinator of Professional Development at the Alberta Teachers' Association. Nancy spent 24 years as a teacher and school administrator, always filling countless hours of the school year coaching teams, organizing ski trips and bringing activity and positivity to the lives of students and staff. She enjoys being active with her friends and family - hiking, running, golfing, biking and being outside in nature.

When not working, Jeff is passionate about a healthy active lifestyle while spending time with his family and can be found on many weekends riding his bike in Edmonton’s river valley.

Ellen represents the Alberta Health Services’ School Health & Wellness Promotion team, where she has been working for over 10 years to support healthy school communities across Alberta. She has been involved in HPEC since 2015 and feels lucky to work with this passionate group of health champions. Ellen calls Calgary home, and when she isn’t working, she enjoys running, baking, making messes and exploring the great outdoors with her three young daughters and snuggling up with her two friendly Labrador Retrievers.

Shannon is an Associate Professor at Mount Royal University and cross-teaches in the Department of Health and Physical Education as well as the Department of Education. Following 8 years as a grade 9-12 HPE specialist, she now focuses on teacher education. Her passions include pre-service teacher practicum experiences, early childhood engagement in the out-of-doors through play, and physical literacy. Shannon enjoys downhill skiing, non-motorized water fun, and spending time outdoor-adventuring with her family.
